Every beginner should learn the ropes before embarking on a new endeavor. Novice dancers must familiarize themselves with basic ballroom dancing moves and terms before stepping onto the dance floor.

First is the Rock Step, a two-step pattern where the weight of one foot is transferred to the other and back. Basic rock steps include the rock forward and rock back versions.

Ball Change is also a sequence of two steps involving a partial weight transfer from the ball of one foot to another.

The Kick Ball Change common in swing dances is led by a kick with the left foot, followed by a slight push off the floor by the ball of the left foot behind the right foot, ending with a step of the right foot.

A common ballroom dancing move is the triple step — three steps taken on two beats of music. Sometimes called the shuffle step, the triple step is performed in quick-quick-slow sequence.

Often a follower’s step in West Coast Swing, Coaster Step is a back-together-forward or forward-together-back triple step danced to the timing of quick-quick-slow.

The Anchor Step is often the terminating step in West Coast Swing dance figures. It ends with the partners settling their weights on the back foot while awaiting the leader’s lead.

Commonly seen in quickstep and cha-cha performances, the Lock Step is done by locking the moving foot as it crosses in front of or behind the standing foot while on approach.

The Grapevine, one of the more popular basic ballroom dancing moves, involves side steps such as those seen in line dances. Continuous step patterns to the side alternate with crosses behind and in front of the supporting foot.
